ADAM’S PANTRY
As you stroll the aisles of Renninger’s Farmers Market in Kutztown, a
quaint little shop may catch your eye. Its fresh green curtains and window
boxes are evocative of an old fashioned country store and its shelf-lined
windows invite you to look in at its many healthy food products. The
pleasant aroma of spices might also attract you as you walk by the large
green oval sign announcing Adam’s Pantry.
Adam’s Pantry is the result of proprietor, Carlton L. Adam’s vision of selling
healthy food at reasonable prices. The economy conscious Adam, a
lifelong resident of Kutztown, feels that it is more important than ever to
offer the consumer the opportunity to feed a family both economically and
nutritiously. To fulfill his goal, he offers a wide variety of beans, rice, flour
and grains from everyday oatmeal to the more unfamiliar quinoa and millet.
Adam’s Pantry also offers a large selection of herbs and spices at
reasonable prices. Herbs and spices have been used for thousands of
years to add flavor, pungency and color to food. Herbs and spices can
contain antioxidant, antibiotic and antifungal components as well as
exquisite flavors and colors. Moreover, if you use herbs and spices to
replace some of the sugar and salt in your diet, you can derive even more
benefit from them. Adam tries to stock several forms of a spice when
possible. For example, in the pepper section one can find cayenne
pepper, red pepper flakes, chipotle pepper, ground black pepper, black
pepper corns and rainbow peppercorns.
For the health conscious who need the occasional snack, the Pantry offers
popcorn, and various low/no salt treats, featuring dried fruit and nuts, and
including such health items as edamame and goji berries. The store also
stocks at least five types of granola and both local and organic honey. A
specialty of the store is a unique variety of healthy and delicious snack
mixes created by Adam’s wife, Denise. Snacks with names such as
“Fitness Mix”, “Anti-Oxidant Blend” and “Hit the Trail” have been designed
to provide energy while combining good taste with nutrition.
Adam himself is an amateur bread maker and chef who has done extensive
reading in the fields of food science and culinary arts, so he can usually
provide answers to questions a customer might have about his products.
Adam says that much of the store’s stock is customer directed. Whenever
he receives a request from a customer, he tries to add that item to his
stock if possible. Consequently, new products are coming in every week,
so it pays to check out Adam’s Pantry often.
Future plans for Adam’s Pantry include offering more original products
such as a hearty whole grain pancake mix and a super enhanced low
sugar granola. A website featuring a complete product listing with
information about product content health benefits, recipes and cooking tips
will be available soon.
